And it slightly bothers me that your suggesting that others should trace too...
This tutorial is over six years old and yes using this guideline back then was practical and worked for me very well as I have learned in my own way to draw better. I learned shadow/lightning, anatomy, and perspective etc., just by drawing exactly over the image. Now I'm able to draw anything I desire in my creative mind. It is similar yet different in the light of drawing a cat over and over in your head in which you will eventually get better, however, how will you ever know if the anatomy, colors etc., is right if you just go by your mind? You won't know unless you have books or images to go by, I decided rather than using reference back then I traced over it so I could heavily study my subject. A year after this one in 2006 there are a few digital artworks that show much more "skill" like you said, by drawing a subject with reference, today 2011 I draw without any reference and I find them pleasant to my eyes but still seeks improvement.
Judging by your art, I see that you enjoy drawing freely without any reference of any sort, which is very nice and common way, good for you. I drew in a different manner for learning reasons in which I thought might be a different and more affective for me as an individual, as suppose to drawing over and over until many years passed and hope that I am better. If you studied your subjects a little more, your drawings would be much more proportionate and more natural colors. This is not meant to be harmful nor offensive, it is merely an explanation of one persons perspective.

Anyways, onto the conversation.
PERSONALLY, if I wanted to learn the subject as closely as you say I would in-deed trace. However I wouldn't upload said traced picture, I would keep it for practice only.
I am mildly offended that you said that I don't use references, because I do. HOWEVER. Everything in my gallery is fairly old, I have like 15 projects going right now (recently I've been VERY A.D.D with my work and can't focus on one thing) and they are ALL better then what I have in here... though they are still far from being professional.
Also I actually didn't take in the age of the deviation O.o but if you weren't suggesting that others should do it, then why is it in a tutorial for "how to do it" most people who see you do it like that will traceimages to mirror your tutorial.
And I guess I do have a problem with that... I dunno, I've seen quite a few artists that I REALLY look up to and then I later find out that they took a picture from google and plopped it in the background, added some effects, gave no link for the original and told no one that they had done that, or they traced or similar situations... I find it wrong that someone could do something like that and get such high regard for their "googling" talents : / I don't know if you or anyone else shares my feelings on that subject, but thats how I feel.
But also my entire time growing up I started out tracing, and everyone loved my art, but when I drew something that WASN'T traced, they didn't give it the light of day, so tracing was a HARD habit to get out of so I've always encouraged people I've "helped" along the years to NEVER trace, unless it's for practice. HOWEVER, you weren't hiding the fact you traced so it's perfectly fine, I'm just worried other people will.
I wasn't trying to attack you so I'm really sorry that my comment was abrupt and undetailed, but I hope this lengthly explanation helps to show you why I said such a thing. You are a very talented artist, and I'm grateful for this tutorial.
Sorry I was referring to your other post there XD
Anyways I love reading, and talking to people so don't worry XD it was just a shocker! I wish I got that long of comments on my art!!! XD XD XD
I see a few references used for some of your artwork which I did not see at time I wrote the reply, I just so happened to click on the "commissions" folder and went off by that. However, I do see now a few that you are referring to, I understand too that many artist are busy and will not post all of their creative works for their own personal reasons. I am not bothered by what you stated however, it is a tutorial under "how to" as far as my way was back in the days and although you personally will not submit it online, I decided to share mine for whatever reason..( I can't recall why other than just wanting to share it). Which ever the case may be I am not offended by the cyber world and try to keep in mind that.. well who cares what others think, just love what you do and you will be recognized for that some point in time.
Lastly, I am not worried about what other people think or do after releasing a tutorial because it's that persons problem to lie about it. When that person tells a lie and even though many will believe that lie, in the end the one that still sits with the sad truth is that person. And if they have to lie to make their self-esteem bloom then let them, trust me when I say that they will never find professional employment as such a person that has to fool the cyber world to feel good.
Have a nice night/day.
You uploaded the tutorial and its the other peoples problem if they trace and lie. I'm glad I said something now :3 I got to know you a little better, and I got to see the other side of my point of view. It's refreshing hearing other peoples views, their stories and their reasons :3
And I completly agree with the first paragraph you typed about understanding the art and the artist, it was truley inspirational. It made me think of my current projects... I think the reason why I cannot complete one is cause I keep getting stressed out about how many I have piled up... I think I might just stick with one and finish it, knock one down at a time. And that way I could get loads of practice in, and really find my self in my art, like where do I stand? Whats my message? And how can I improve.
I actually needed your fur tutorial for one of the projects, thats why I came :3
Oh my commissions folder?! LOL no wonder! My featured gallery is the only good things in there, and even those are lacking! XD
Also it's night time, just about to head off to bed actually~ Goodnight ;3
I find that it's more comfortable to draw one idea or project at a time, reason for that is; just when you start to get the hang of a style and "look" you're going for in that particular project, when you decide to start drawing on another project (maybe because you're tired of this one) then you will literary loose your progression in learning with the first project. When you once again go back to the first project you will notice it's difficult to draw where you left off. Shifting between projects is not a good idea. If you get tired at all or bored of the current project, literary take a break for days even if you must. Rest assured the next day you will feel like you just left off and didn't loose anything. Just something I noticed that I did a lot, and hardly felt like I was being productive. When I changed my routine and concentrated at one thing at a time with plenty of breaks when I felt rushed or tired I started to feel like.. a fresh breath of air, productive and happy I suppose.
